PBK General

  • Paperback copies may be added to either of EPL’s two print collections:
  • the hardcover/permanent (regular) collection, or
  • the PBK collection (formerly an uncatalogued browsing collection until 2010).
  • EPL staff identify the appropriate collection at the time of ordering; the physical binding is not necessarily the deciding factor.
  • PBK copies are not protected with Kapco covers.
  • See details about the equivalent Juvenile Print Collection.
  • The PBK collection is fully catalogued; the call number field is recorded differently from the regular collection and the items are labelled differently.

09X Call Number

  • Fiction titles are catalogued with a call number which includes its genre and only one letter based on its main entry, e.g.
          099  Fantasy G|vPBK (PBK collection)
          100  Gilman, Laura Anna.
          500  A fantasy novel.

Paperback Copies of Titles in the Hardcover/Permanent Collection

  • If copies are added to the regular collection, a new call number (without the $vPBK) would become the primary call number; it might differ from the PBK collection call number, e.g.
          099  GRA
          099  Horror G|vPBK
500  A horror novel in the paperback collection. (Note added to existing regular collection record.)
  • PBK copies are usually mass market paperbacks (and occasionally trade paperbacks).
  • Trade paperbacks as well as hard backed books are usually added to our regular collection (but occasionally mass market format paperbacks are supplied).

Label Placement Example

  • For paperback books no spine label is applied, instead a 'letter' label indicated by the first letter of the authors last name is applied with the label starting on the spine and wrapping to the front. With paperback, above the letter label a collection label is applied that indicates what collection the item belongs to for example 'Teen Fiction'
  • Not all PBKs have a collection label above the "letter" label; i.e., adult general fiction where no genre/Canadian/short story label is applied; juvenile board books and juvenile PBK picture books.

For the paperback collection, genre labels are applied above the letter which identifies the first letter of the main entry; the maple leaf label for Canadian fiction authors is applied below the letter label.
