Discarding (withdrawing) items

Withdrawn items are checked out to a service point discard card. Each service point has a card for each month of the year.

Name:                  MLW-DISCARD ITEMS January

User ID:                MLW-DISCARD-JAN

To discard items:

  • Choose CHECKOUT wizard.
  • Click on LOOKUP USER.
  • Click on BROWSE USER to search by name.
  • Enter Service Point Code-DISCARD (as name).
  • Choose appropriate card.
  • Proceed to checkout items, ensuring that you are turning off the security bit in the RFID tag.

Note: you may also type the user ID in, as the same pattern is used for each branch and each month

Discard cards should have no more than 1000 items checked out at one time. If all your discard card for the month is full, contact the Associate Manager of Circulation and Interlibrary Loan services to have another one created for you.

Physical processing of discards

  • If the item is being thrown out, no further processing is required after discarding the item by checking it out to a discard card.
  • RFID tags do not need to be disabled using the RFID conversion softward when discarding items, as the only information stored on the tag is the barcode number. They should have the security turned off, however, using the standard checkout method so they do not ring the gates if a patron has a booksale book in their bag.
  • If the item is being sent to booksale, black out the barcode with a China marker or a permananent marker. Stamping the item "Canceled" is not required.
